Methodology, progress, caveats.
In the interests of you fully understanding the responses within and the context in which they were solicited, we felt it was

important to inform you of the minutiae of the process that created this book.
For around a month we talked about questions, what questions we'd really like to ask. We've elected to detail the intention

behind those questions within the individual chapters.
Once agreed upon, a contributors guide was written and a website created. Fairly early on we decided that email was going to

be the principal contributing conduit, in the absence of any significant resources for travelling around and interviewing.

This also gave us a continuity of response that individual personality aion kinah couldn't pollute. Email addresses were

procured from company sites, weblogs and the kind support of a few partners who advocated our project to the esteemed members

of their address books.
An initial email was sent out, something like this (the only differentials were obviously in name and occasionally in citing

The creator of Civilization, and granddaddy of prefixing aion kinah titles with the lead designer's name, then suffixing it with

inexplicable exclamation marks, has won back a lost child. The Railroad Tycoon series departed from the station and ran off

with another developer after his company, Firaxis, fathered the first one in 1990. Now though, it's come back to Papa, and is

retitled as Sid Meier's Railroads! On the eve-ish of its release, Eurogamer chatted with one of videogaming's oldest and most

respected luminaries about trains, hats and Stairway to Heaven.
Eurogamer: Whereabouts are you at with Railroads? Is it finished now?
Sid Meier: We have gone gold, it's in production and I think it's gonna be on sale 27th October.
Eurogamer: You must be glad to have it finished?
Sid Meier: It was a little bit of a relief to finish the aion kinah . We're working on a demo and some other things and then we're

really done. It's a happy time to have a project completed.
Eurogamer: Do you have any traditions you do when you finish a game?
Sid Meier: We have what we call our Mastering Hats, which are funny hats we wear when we think the game's just about to be

finished, cos we're always waiting for that last bug or we have to go through testing. So it's a good luck charm, we put on

our mastering hats and wait to hear that everything's OK. Also, when we hear the game's in stores we have a little party and

celebrate. People have put in lots of hours, lots of overtime, so we try and release the tension of all of it and have a bit

of fun.
Eurogamer: So how do you refer to the aion kinah in the office? Do you call it 'Railroads' or the whole "Sid Meier's Railroads!",

with the exclamation mark and everything?
Sid Meier: [Laughs]. Nah, we just call it Railroads. We drop the Sid Meier. Actually, we called it Railroad Tycoon for a long

time because our original title was 'Railroad Tycoon Rerouted'. There was the Matrix Reloaded, so we thought it would be

funny to call it Railroad Tycoon Rerouted, but it ended up being Railroads. A nice snappy name, rolls equally off the tongue.
Eurogamer: Did you have the option to call it Railroad Tycoon 4?
Sid Meier: I believe so. That name is owned by [Firaxis' parent company] Take 2, but it just didn't seem like the right thing

to do.
Eurogamer: Do you see this as a sequel to the Railroad Tycoon series, or as a whole new aion kinah?
Sid Meier: It's more that Tycoon has gone off in a different direction [note - Railroad Tycoon II and III were developed by

Popcap Games, rather than Firaxis]. There have been a zillion tycoon games, and not all of them are of the highest quality,

so it was just a genre that we didn't really want to become part of.
Eurogamer: So if it's not tycoon game, what is it?
Sid Meier: Well, everything that you think is cool about railroads is in this aion kinah. Basically ,we tried to combine what's

called a model railroad - the operating parts, the steam coming off the engines, the people getting on and off the trains,

the loading and unloading of the cargo - with some of the strategy of actually operating a railroad, having to make money,

choose routes and schedule your trains, take advantage of the newer technology, the different engines and things like that.

So it's kind of all the fun stuff about railroads in one game.
Eurogamer: Does it still have much in common with 1829, the boardgame that inspired your original Railroad Tycoon PC aion kinah?
Sid Meier: In a few ways, yes. It kind of lets you enjoy the history of railroads, it takes you through a hundred or more

years of railroad history in one game, so you get to start with the very primitive steam engines, then see the evolution of

diesel and electric. With a computer aion kinah, we can just do so much more in terms of bringing the world to life, and bringing

in the visuals and sounds and things like that.

Japanese developer Camelot embodies a basic logical disconnect that we've been nursing: we were aware that a aion kinah called

Camelot was responsible for RPGs like Shining Force and Golden Sun, and we were aware that a studio called Camelot developed

the original Everybody's Golf and subsequently Mario Golf, but what we hadn't ever quite put together was the fact that it

was the same Camelot responsible for both - a one-team studio whose CV bounces between the poles of epic RPGs and light-

hearted but deceptively deep golf games.
Right now, the studio is finishing off the Western version of its new, Wii-exclusive golf aion kinah , We Love Golf - an outing

which will look familiar to anyone who's played Everybody's Golf, but whose Wii control system sets it apart from anything

else. Acknowledging (at last!) that swinging a Wiimote doesn't actually feel like swinging a golf club, the game drops the

idea of emulating a "natural" swing, opting for a more precise system that allows you to set swing parameters with the remote

and then simply match the timing and angle of an on-screen swing to hit the shot.
The system belies the complexity of the aion kinah , which brims with courses, tournaments and options, including a fully realised

online mode that allows you to collect the scalps (well, badges) of your rivals in a gallery of victories. Plus, being a

Capcom-published game, you also get to play as characters hailing from everything from Street Fighter through Dark Stalkers

to Zack & Wiki - once you've unlocked the appropriate costumes, of course. We hooked up with Hiroyuki and Shugo Takahashi -

brothers - over a video link from Japan to play a few rounds (we lost - miserably) and find out more about We Love Golf, and

how the team behind Shining Force has become one of the world's best golf aion kinah developers. And since they pretty much spoke

to us as one, so they do here.
Eurogamer: There are other golf games on the Wii, and they're all quite similar - so what makes We Love Golf into a different

experience?
Takahashi brothers: The Wii userbase is a "lighter" userbase than some of the other systems, and there are a whole lot of

golf games out there that are designed to be easily picked up and played - that you can just grab really quickly and have a

little bit of fun with. We didn't want to make that kind of aion kinah - we really didn't feel that that was our role. We didn't

really want to make one of those games that are pretty much only for people who have never touched games before, or a game

that's just aimed at your grandmother, where you can give the controller to her and let her play it. We do think we're good

at making games that are easy to get into, but which also show you from the start how deep and how far you can go into the

game. It's really a deep game, we feel, while still being quite accessible right from the beginning. That's probably the

biggest difference.
We also didn't think we needed to make a game that just lets the player swing the remote control to play golf. There are

already other aion kinah that do that. All of our games are designed for people who don't just want to pick it up and play for

half an hour. We make our games for people who want to get a bit more playtime and a bit more depth out of their games.
Eurogamer: Given that you say you didn't want to make a casual game - and you didn't want to use the Wiimote like a golf club

- what was the appeal of the Wii, as distinct from other platforms?
Takahashi brothers: It's not that we don't want to make a game for light users - we think that a light user can get a lot out

of We Love Golf, and we definitely think that a beginner can pick it up and have a lot of fun. It's just that we're better at

putting depth into aion kinah . We're really happy that we've been able to hit both of those areas with this game.

These days more and more aion kinah seem to be based on established "licenses", such as movies, novels, or comic books.
Of course, the idea of the "game of the movie" has been around for a long time - one of the first was a terrible computer

game based on ET, way back in the early 1980's. And generally they haven't gotten any better with time - anybody remember

"Men In Black", or "Star Wars : Phantom Menace"?
But now gaming licenses seem to be having something of a resurgence, and this time the games are actually looking interesting

in their own right. So what is behind this trend, and what do the licenses offer to developers, publishers, and gamers?
aion kinah like FAKK 2 (based on an animated movie), KISS : Psycho Circus (based on a comic, itself based on a heavy metal band)

and Star Trek : Elite Force (based on a TV series) are amongst those leading the way, and we spoke to the developers of these

and other games to find out more...

Perhaps the most obvious benefit of building a game based on an established license is that it gives you a background

setting, and maybe even characters and a plot, on which to base your game.
Mark Morgan is a "Digital Artisan" at Third Law Interactive, who are currently working on a game based on the KISS : Psycho

Circus comics created by Todd McFarlane of Spawn fame. According to Mark, working with the Psycho Circus license gives them

"a great base universe established in the comics, as well as a story and imposing imagery".
This acts as a base and background for the aion kinah , which gives it a more solid feel. After all, Todd McFarlane and his company

have been working for years on creating a lavishly detailed world and characters for the comics, a luxury that few developers

can afford.
This isn't just an excuse for developers to be lazy though, and Third Law have added their own touch to the game rather than

just taking all their ideas from the comics.
"We have tried our best to make Psycho Circus as if it were our own original concept", Mark Morgan explained. "In truth,

granted the freedom we've had in design and development of the title, it damn near is."
Will Loconto, Third Law's audio designer, elaborates. "Contrary to what people might think about a licensed product, we

actually have a lot of freedom in designing this aion kinah ."
"Both KISS and Todd McFarlane Productions have rights of refusal if we do something they don't like, but so far they have

taken a very hands-off approach. While there will be a number of characters that come from the comics, most of the creatures

in the game are our own."
FAKK Me
Ritual are taking a similar approach with their current project, a third person action adventure game based on the

forthcoming animated movie "Heavy Metal : FAKK 2".
Instead of just making a "game of the movie", Ritual are using the license as a backdrop for their game. Although some of the

aion kinah characters are taken from the movie, the game's story and settings are mostly Ritual's own creation.
The key, as Tom Mustaine told me in a recent interview, is that "the sheer volume of vivid creative content that exists

within the Heavy Metal universe helps to spawn great game ideas".
"Kevin [Eastman - director of the FAKK 2 movie] was really behind us creating our own content for the game, [while] giving

Ritual the opportunity to use any assets from the movie or the Heavy Metal universe."
This freedom has meant that although Ritual have been inspired by the comics and movie, and the aion kinah will no doubt be

instantly familiar to Heavy Metal fans, they haven't been constrained to simply retelling the movie's story in digital form.
The Automated Alice.

It's the woe of every committed gamer: piles of uncompleted aion kinah . We all swear we'll go back and complete Vice City/Splinter

Cell/Project Gotham/Mario Sunshine/Metroid Prime/Wind Waker but the sad reality is most of us will - most likely - never get

around to resuming our valiant quest to conquer these epics.
Picking on any of the above recent classics, it's fair to say that all of them take well in excess of 20 hours to complete.

Maybe more. And these are just the deserving cases; the elite titles that really warrant you spending weeks on end coming

back to.
But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Underneath the cream of the crop are literally dozens of equally great titles of

their era dating back probably 10 years or more that you still - every once in a while convince yourself in a moment of

foolishness that you'll come back to and lavish the attention that any number of classic games over the years surely deserve.
And you know what the problem is? aion kinah are just too bloody long. Pure and simple. I can hear the 'bloody journalist'

comments already, but bear with me. This is something that's been happening for years before I got paid to play games.
Big piles of TBC
We review about 30 games a month here at EG, and in the name of good service we like to play through as much of them as

humanly possible. But that's all well and good, until you work out how long it actually takes to complete the average aion kinah.
Now, I have no better idea of what constitutes an average game length than anyone else (no-one's exactly been counting have

they?), but over the past twenty odd years that figure seems to have grown out of all proportion.
You see, it never used to be this way. When videogames first grabbed me by the scruff of the neck in those days of Grandstand

TV games systems, smoky arcades, attribute clash and R: tape loading errors, the idea of it taking you 10, 20, 30 or more

hours just to feckin' finish a game would've seemed insane. Even the most (seemingly) ambitious, vast, labyrinthine epics of

the era like Jet Set Willy, Underwurlde and Sabre Wulf could be (theoretically) completed in a matter of a few hours,

providing you were good enough (and they weren't bugged to shit).
No matter what genre you were into, be it adventure, arcade, platform, shoot 'em up, whatever, you could, with an elite level

of skill, eventually crack these aion kinah in a few hours from start to finish, and happily move on, maybe completing several

games over a weekend if you were really on a roll.
Then the CD era came along and everything went tits up. Cartridges had hinted at what was to come, with epics like Final

Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger commanding immense amount of time, but CDs really stuck the boot in. Almost overnight,

publishers and developers made an enormous rod for their own backs and began producing the kind of epics that could feasibly

last the average (and I use this term loosely) gamer several weeks or even months. "40 hours of gameplay!!!" screamed the

packaging. "Over 100 hours of aion kinah!!!" Oh, turn it in.
Out of Time
Now, there's nothing intrinsically wrong with giving the consumer better value for money, and therefore a longer and

potentially even more enjoyable experience, but from my experience a worrying proportion of games will never get finished,

and this is a crime. It's curiously unsatisfying and niggles away at the back of your mind like a thousand loose ends and

adventures unfinished. It'd be like watching the first half an hour of a movie or reading the first ten chapters of a book,

or listening to the first few tracks of a CD and leaving them to one side. Unless they were just really bad movies/CD/books,

you just wouldn't be so utterly wasteful in your consumption of really high quality entertainment that you're enjoying

intensely. But, in the land of aion kinah , we do it routinely.
Having asked around, and seen enough evidence of it over the years, it's clear there's a lot of us sitting there guiltily

with a gigantic pile of really great titles. Classics even.
